Why a 60-point move matters more than a 1-point rate cut
Lenders price in tiers. At 580 you are in revenue-based products with factor rates. At 625 online lines and term loans open. At 650 to 680 CDFIs, banks and the SBA become realistic. Moving one tier can halve the cost of capital, which no amount of negotiating within a tier will do.
Fix in this order
- Errors. Pull all three personal reports. Dispute anything inaccurate: wrong balances, accounts that are not yours, paid items shown as unpaid. Bureaus must respond within 30 days.
- Utilization. Pay revolving balances below 30% of limits before the statement date; under 10% is better. This updates on the next cycle.
- Recent collections. Negotiate pay-for-delete where possible; a paid collection is better than an open one but a deleted one is best.
- Inquiries. Stop applying for anything for 90 days before you apply for funding.
- Thin files. Add a secured card or become an authorized user on a well-managed account.
When to wait and when to borrow anyway
If the need can wait 60 to 90 days and your score is within 40 points of the next tier, wait and fix. If the need is immediate, borrow the minimum from a lender that reports to business bureaus, fix the file in parallel, and refinance as soon as the contract allows.
Working with a credit repair company
A reputable firm does the disputes and negotiations for you and can be worth it for complex files. Check that they are compliant with the Credit Repair Organizations Act, charge after work is performed, and give you a written plan with timelines. Nobody can legally remove accurate negative information.
