How a net-30 account builds credit
You order, the vendor ships and invoices, you pay within 30 days, and the vendor reports the trade experience to one or more business bureaus. Repeated on-time or early payments establish payment history, the biggest factor in business credit scores.
What to check before applying
- Which bureaus the vendor reports to. Ask directly; many do not report at all.
- Requirements. Most want an EIN, a business address, and sometimes 30 to 90 days in business.
- Minimums and fees. Some require a first purchase of $50 to $100; a few charge membership fees. Avoid paying for the privilege.
- Products you use. Office supplies, shipping materials, cleaning products and software are common.
How to run them
Open three to five accounts, place a modest order on each, and pay within a week of the invoice. Repeat monthly for three months. Then check your D&B and Experian Business reports to confirm the tradelines appear. Once they do, move on to a business credit card and keep the vendor accounts active with occasional purchases.
